Saints 2019 Draft Recap: Team made aggressive moves to get their guys

The Saints addressed positions of need with their few draft picks, but there are still some holes in the roster

Round 2

NO. 48 Erik McCoy, Center, Texas A&M

The Saints were aggressive in the second round of the draft, trading up from the 62nd pick to take Erik McCoy.

McCoy is a 6’4”, 315 lbs Center out of Texas A&M.

In picking McCoy, the Saints have addressed the need for depth in their offensive line.

The Black and Gold already signed former-Viking Nick Easton during the off-season. Now, they’ve added another flexible guard at center to fill the gap that Max Unger left after announcing his retirement following the 2018 season.

The Saints swapped second round picks with the Dolphins to take him. Along with that, the Saints gave up one of their two sixth-round picks, plus a second-round pick from next year’s draft. They did get a fourth round pick in return though.

Round 4

NO. 105, Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, Safety, Florida

The Saints traded up again in the fourth round to secure Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, a safety from the University of Florida.

The Saints swapped picks with the New York Jets for a shot at Gardner-Johnson, who was selected to the AP All Bowl team this past season. New Orleans also gave its only fifth-round pick to the Jets for the upgrade.

Gardner-Johnson recorded 71 tackles, including nine tackles for loss to go with his three sacks. He also led the Gators with four interceptions.

Round 6

NO. 177, Saquan Hampton, Safety, Rutgers

The Saints drafted a second safety Saturday, adding Saquan Hampton out of Rutgers with the 177th overall pick in the sixth round of the draft.

Hampton measures in at 6'1", 206-pounds and had 64 tackles and three interceptions in 2018.

The Saints obtained the 177th pick in a trade with the New York Jets last off-season for QB Teddy Bridgewater in exchange for their third-round pick.

Round 7

NO. 231, Alize Mack, Tight End, Notre Dame

The New Orleans Saints added depth at tight end in the 7th round with Alize Mack.

Mack caught 36 passes for 360 yards and three touchdowns during his senior season.

He’ll join Pro Bowl tight end Jared Cook on the Saints roaster after Ben Watson retired during the offseason.

NO. 244, Kaden Ellis, Linebacker, Idaho

The Saints wrapped up their draft on defense with Idaho linebacker Kaden Elliss.

Elliss notched 16 tackles for a loss and 7 sacks during his senior season at Idaho. He's the son of former Detroit Lion and Denver Bronco, Luther Elliss.
