Louisiana gas prices hit $4.15 per gallon, expected to keep rising

AAA says the current price is just a penny lower than the the highest recorded average price for a gallon of gas in Louisiana.

NEW ORLEANS — The pain at the pump continues as gas prices in Louisiana continue to climb to $4.14 per gallon on average, according to AAA.

That price is up from 13 cents from last week. AAA reports that the average cost of a gallon of gas in the state a month ago was $3.85 per gallon and $2.73 per gallon a year ago.

AAA says the current price is just a penny lower than the highest recorded average price for a gallon of gas in Louisiana ($4.15 on March 11, 2022).

Nationwide, gas prices are already setting records. GasBuddy reported last week that prices rose above a previous all-time high earlier this year of $4.35 per gallon and are expected to climb through Memorial Day as summer road trip season begins.

GasBuddy said the cost of diesel also set a new all-time record of $5.35 per gallon on Tuesday.

The company says that gas prices decreased after spiking in March as the conflict in Ukraine continued. But prices are on the rise amid possible new sanctions by the European Union on Russian oil.

"Russia’s oil increasingly remains out of the market, crimping supply while demand rebounds ahead of the summer driving season,” GasBuddy's Patrick De Haan said. “There’s little, if any, good news about fuel prices heading into summer, and the problem could become worse should we see an above average hurricane season, which could knock out refinery capacity at a time we badly need it as refined product inventories continue to plummet."
