Update for St. James Parish at 10:55 a.m.

St. James Parish officials are preparing for the anticipated inclement weather associated with Hurricane Nate.

Parish President Timmy Roussel has declared a State of Emergency for St. James Parish in advance of Hurricane Nate making landfall along the northern Gulf Coast.

A hurricane watch is in effect for St. James Parish until further notice. A hurricane watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within 48 hours.

The National Weather Service expects three to five inches of rain as well as the potential for tropical storm force winds gusting to hurricane strength within the area from Saturday, Oct. 7 through Sunday, Oct. 8.

Recreational Boating
All public boat launches in St. James Parish are closed to recreational traffic until further notice.

Youth Soccer
All youth soccer games scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017 are canceled.

Precautionary/Preparedness Actions
Now is the time to check emergency plans, ensure that emergency supply kits are stocked and take necessary actions to secure homes and businesses.

Residents are asked to remove any debris from catch basins and storm drains and secure loose items near homes and businesses. Also, please avoid placing debris in ditches, drainage canals, and on the side of the road that may impede drainage.

The St. James Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness is monitoring weather conditions and has been in contact with the National Weather Service and the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness to receive the latest weather forecasts. It is imperative that residents monitor local weather stations for any weather updates.

Orleans Parish

Sandbags will be available at the following New Orleans Fire Department stations from 7 24 hours a day, starting Friday, Oct. 6:

St. Bernard Parish

- St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office will distribute free sandbags to parish residents Friday, Oct. 6 from 1 to 7 p.m. at the sandbag barn in the old Kaiser facility at the rear of the Port of St. Bernard in Chalmette.

Sandbags will be available at 7 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 6.
