Parish-by-parish list of closures, shelters ahead of severe weather

The threat of storms and severe weather will come tonight as the cold front moves in. The timing will be after 9-10 p.m. for most.

TERREBONNE PARISH, La. — Get ready for an active weather day as a powerful storm system moves our way out of Texas. This afternoon the main story will be the strong south winds kicking in. A high wind warning has been issued for our area as non-thunderstorm winds could gust to 50 mph through the afternoon and evening. 

The threat of storms and severe weather will come tonight as the cold front moves in. The timing will be after 9-10 p.m. for most. Right now, the wind shear will be off the charts for the area, but there is some question on how much instability (fuel for storms) is around.

Here is a list of closures and shelters:

Terrebonne Parish

  • Schools announced early dismissal at 1:45 p.m. 

Jefferson Parish

  • Parks, libraries, and early education centers announced early closings for 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
  • Shelter located at The Terrytown Playground at 641 Heritage Ave, opens at 2 p.m.

St. Charles Parish: 

  • Temporary shelter at the Edward A. Dufresne Community Center, 274 Judge Edward Dufresne Parkway, Luling,  opens at 6:30 p.m.  
    • Cots will be available for those in need
    • Residents should bring blankets, snacks and water.  

St. John Parish:

  • Temporary shelter at West St. John High School Gymnasium - 480 LA 3127, Edgard, opens at 6:30 p.m.  
  • Temporary shelter at Lake Pontchartrain Elementary School Gymnasium- 3328 Highway 51, LaPlace, opens at 6:30 p.m.  
    • MRES, water, and cots will be provided.

Orleans Parish: 

  • City Hall will close today at 4 p.m.
