At peak, 18,000 Entergy customers without power amid flooding streets

The power outages were caused by severe overnight storms, which flooded streets and taxed New Orleans' infrastructure

NEW ORLEANS — Update: All but 60 customers in Jefferson Parish and 30 customers in Orleans Parish had their power restored as of 10 p.m. Sunday, May 12, Entergy's map showed.

More than 18,000 Entergy customers in the metro New Orleans area lost power Sunday after severe weather moved over the area overnight, bringing heavy rain and lightning.

The majority of outages were in Jefferson Parish, with some affected customers in Orleans, St. Charles and St. John the Baptist parishes, according to Entergy's outage map.

By 3 p.m. Sunday, 1,200 people were still without power in Jefferson Parish, while customers in the surrounding parishes had their electricity restored.

Entergy officials said the remaining customers left in the dark should have their power restored between 4 and 6 p.m.

The power outages come on the heels of widespread flooding that is blocked streets and diverted traffic throughout New Orleans.
