WWL-TV Meteorologist Alexandra Cranford

We have quite a typical summer pattern in place this weekend. High pressure is stationed to our east, allowing south winds to deliver Gulf moisture and help spark a few afternoon thunderstorms.

As for Saturday evening weather… spotty showers and thunderstorms have formed with the heating of the day, as is usual for this time of year. The spotty rain will die down around 7-8 p.m. as we lose daytime heating. Where it is not raining, temperatures have reached low 90s with heat indices close to 100. And that… is our summertime weather in a nut shell.

Sunday weather for Father’s Day will be almost the same, so be ready in case of a spotty storm, and otherwise enjoy a partly cloudy and hot June day.

Most of this week brings the trend of highs near 90 and some scattered afternoon rain. The highest chance for those afternoon storms will be Monday and Tuesday as a small upper-level disturbance moves near us and helps spark some of the afternoon rain. As with most rain this time of year, it will be mainly in the daytime with most action slacking off as we approach sunset (which is just after 8:00 p.m. right now). Rain amounts could be a half-inch to inch or so under the thunderstorms, and a stray heavy downpours or strong thunderstorm is possible.

A slight drying trend may return for Friday and Saturday.

No tropical activity is expected in the Atlantic Basin this week.

Mississippi River Update: The Mississippi River has neared its crest upriver at Baton Rouge and Red River Landing, holding just above 61 ft. Then it is forecast to begin a slow fall by the middle of next week at those spots. The river has not reached the trigger point at Morganza, and now is not expect to do so, so the floodway will not be opened at this time. Here in New Orleans and Reserve, the river should stay high but remain steady below flood stage through June.
