Fish & Game: Sac-a-lait fishing

Crappie, white perch or SacaLait, no matter what you call them, everyone calls these fish are delicious.

Crappie, white perch or SacaLait, no matter what you call them, everyone calls these fish are delicious.

February and March are the peak months for SacaLait fishing because they’re in spawning concentrations.

The best spots for winter and spring SacaLait are the canal banks along Bayou Black, Bayou Des Allemands, Lake Bouef, Bayou Lacombe and the Pearl and Tchefuncte Rivers

Live shiners under a cork are by far the most popular bait, but small tube jigs and mini spinnerbaits are good artificials.

Black and white crappier are different species. Coloration varies in both and they are only identifiable by the number of dorsal spines. The combined daily limit for both species is a generous 50 statewide with only a few exceptions in North Louisiana lakes.

If your saltwater spot for speckled trout hasn’t turned on yet, head for fresh water where the other speckled fish are biting.
