Baby dies as car collides with tractor-trailer on I-12

Police said that when Nugent's Taurus pulled onto I-12, it went right into the path of a tractor-trailer and the two vehicles collided.

COVINGTON – A baby was killed and four other people suffered moderate injuries when a vehicle pulled into the path of a tractor-trailer on I-12 Wednesday, according to State Police.

The incident occurred just before 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday on I-12 near the U.S. 190 exit.

According to State Police, a Ford Taurus being driven by 62-year-old Erroll Nugent of Hammond, missed its exit to U.S. 190 South and proceeded into the median in an apparent attempt to turn around.

Police said that when Nugent’s Taurus pulled onto I-12, it went right into the path of a tractor-trailer and the two vehicles collided.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured, but a one-month-old child in the rear seat in the Taurus sustained severe injuries. The baby, identified as Bryce Martin, was rushed to Lakeview Hospital and later was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in New Orleans, where he later passed away. Police said Nugent and three other passengers all had moderate injuries.

Police said that once released from the hospital, Nugent will be booked on one count of vehicular homicide, three counts of vehicular negligent injury, two counts of failure to provide proper child restraint and one count each of careless operation of a motor vehicle and having a suspended driver’s license.
