Clancy's commentary: Bill to lower state drinking age

LaFleur introduced a bill that would let 19- and 20-year-olds drink legally, if they pass the alcohol equivalent of driver's ed.

State Senator Eric LaFleur of Ville Platte has an unconventional approach to the problem of binge drinking and alcohol-related hazing on college campuses. His solution is … more education AND potentially more alcohol.

LaFleur introduced a bill that would let 19- and 20-year-olds drink legally, if they pass the alcohol equivalent of driver's ed. He says teaching them about the dangers of alcohol would make them drink responsibly.

LaFleur's bill includes parental consent and tougher DWI penalties. But it is still controversial. It comes up for a committee hearing next week.

I agree with LaFleur about this much: We should teach kids about the dangers of alcohol, but only to make them more responsible when they turn 21.
