Suspect killed in shootout with Tangipahoa Parish deputies, LSP reports

When they arrived, deputies made contact with the suspect and shot were fired, officials say.

AMITE, La. -- Tangipahoa Parish Sheriffs' Deputies shot and killed a man who was allegedly threatening family members with a weapon Sunday night.

According to Louisiana State Police, deputies were sent to Taylor Creek Road around 10 p.m. after receiving word 36-year-old Philip Steven McMichael was threatening family members with a weapon.

When they arrived, deputies made contact with McMichael and shots were fired, officials say. McMichael was fatally wounded and pronounced dead by the coroner's office.

"With all things considered, we are incredibly grateful and blessed that none of our deputies were injured during this incident," Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards said.

The Louisiana State Police is investigating the incident.

"This is still an active investigation and no other information is available at this time," State Police said in a statement.
