Fish & Game: Weekend fishing & hunting options

If you can manage to stay dry, early reports say this could be the best saltwater fishing weekend of this year. It's also the start of wild turkey hunting season.

Fishing took a big turn in the outdoors this week and that adds another choice for sportsmen.

If redfish are your target, there are lots of hot spots but maybe none better below Venice on the East side of the river where easy full limits of everything from bull to rat reds were coming in on a variety of baits but nothing better than dead shrimp under a popping cork.

Speckled trout have been less plentiful but not in Lake Catherine where Capt. Mike Gallo caught near limits using Gulp under a cork. And don’t let the river water in Lake Pontchartrain scare you off, find clear salty water patches close to the bridges where speckled trout have been caught on matrix shad on 3/8 ounce jig heads bounced on the bottom.

Statewide opening day for the Louisiana wild turkey season is another option at one half hour before sunrise on Saturday. Limit this season is one gobbler or male per day, two per season. To be legal, remember to tag and report each bird to the Department of Wildlife & Fisheries.
