BATON ROUGE, La. — A fire destroyed a Baton Rouge church early Saturday morning,

According to The Advocate, firefighters were able to stop the flames from spreading to the neighboring St. Luke's Episcopal School, but the church has been considered a total loss.

"There are no injures at this time," Baton Rouge Fire Department said early Saturday.
"Please avoid the area."

The church sat on the 8000 block of Goodwood Boulevard, in the proposed city of St. George. Fire departments from both Baton Rouge and St. George were on the scene.

The Rev. Shannon Rogers Duckworth said she hoped the community would pray for the church.

"In the midst of this tremendous loss, we also remember that we are people of hope," Duckworth said. "And as I reminded the leadership gathered early this morning, the church still stands. They are the church. We are the church."

BRFD posted a video of the scene of the fire early Saturday morning on social media.
