KENNER - A 38-year-old Kenner man beat and abused a 37-year-old woman over a six-year period that ended with her death from internal bleeding, Kenner Police said.
Spokesman Brian McGregor said Alex Sanders would be booked on second-degree murder in the death of Amy Cancienne.
According to McGregor, deputies responded to a call at Sanders' residence on Nov. 12 and found Cancienne unresponsive and cold to the touch. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
An autopsy showed that Cancienne died of blunt force trauma. McGregor further stated that the autopsy revealed that Cancienne had a laceration to her liver and bruising to her face, head, arms, torso and multiple broken ribs in various stages of healing.
McGregor said that an investigation revealed that Cancienne had been abused by Sanders over the past six years and that the beatings had intensified. The investigation also showed that Sanders had beaten Cancienne during the time in which she suffered the fatal injury to her liver.
Sanders was still in custody with no bond set as of Tuesday morning. Sanders was on parole for a 1996 conviction on attempted first-degree murder.
