'Senseless and violent tragedy': 4-year-old girl, father killed in LaPlace

Detectives don't yet know why the shooting happened, but they say the father was the intended target

LAPLACE, La. -- Detectives are asking for the public's help to find the gunman who killed a 4-year-old girl and her father Tuesday night in LaPlace.

The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office says 29-year-old Cameron Mack was carrying his 4-year-old daughter, Cali, and groceries to their apartment when a gunman "came out of the darkness" and fired multiple shots, killing both of them.

Sheriff Mike Tregre said the gunman then ran into a wooded area near the apartment. He remained at-large late Wednesday morning.

Cali was pronounced dead at Oschner Hospital in LaPlace. Her father was airlifted to University Medical Center in New Orleans where he died early Wednesday.

"They loved their daddy. They loved their daddy. And their daddy loved them," said Cali's Grandmother and Cameron's mother Angela Walker. "He had mad love for those kids. I ain’t never saw a man love his children like my son loved those girls."

Detectives believe Mack was targeted, but they do not yet know the motive. Police said Mack spoke with detectives before he died.

The Sheriff's Office described the shooting as a "senseless and violent tragedy."

"I just hope and pray that God will lead us to this suspect," Tregre said. "It's going to take more than the St. John Sheriff's Office to solve this crime to give this little girl and her dad justice."

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111. Crimestoppers has offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the suspect responsible for the shooting.
