COVINGTON, La. — A paraprofessional working at a Covington elementary school was arrested after a complaint of cruelty to juveniles, according to the Covington Police Department.

E. E. Lyon Elementary School staff reported Monica Bates last week concerning an incident while she was "supervising the student" during school hours.

Bates was arrested on Thursday and is "no longer an employee of the school system."

“This type of alleged behavior will not be tolerated,” said St. Tammany Parish Public School Superintendent Frank Jabbia. “The safety of our students is always our top priority and we are committed to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for all students.”

Police said due to the nature of the allegations, they are protecting the privacy of the student involved.

Bates was booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center on one count of cruelty to juveniles.

No further information is available at this time.
