Father indicted for fatal house fire that killed his three children

Washington is being held without bond at the Orleans Justice Center.

NEW ORLEANS — The man accused of killing his three children by setting his family's house on fire has been formally indicted, according to the DA's Office.

Joseph Washington is now facing three counts of first-degree murder and one count of obstruction of justice.

Back in October, investigators said Washington set the fire after making threats. The children's mother was at work and called the police for help. But when crews got to the home in the 4900 block of America Street, it was too late.

Firefighters found two unresponsive children – a 5-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy were rescued from the home by firefighters but died at the hospital. A third child was found near the center of the home and was pronounced dead on the scene.
