METAIRIE - A woman, who shot and killed her husband in a Metairie home Friday night and then called 911 to report it, says her husband abused for years and she feared for her life, according to Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff said his office got the call and responded to the scene in the 2900 block of Transcontinental Drive in Metairie Friday night just before 9 p.m.
When deputies arrived they found Ian Mastin, 27, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
According to the sheriff's office, the woman was questioned and stated there was a history of physical and psychological abuse by Mastin, her husband. There were no incidents previously reported to law enforcement, and the woman said she hid the abuse from her family and friends. The sheriff's office says the woman was able to provide a "significant amount of corroborating evidence" to back up her statements.
The woman also said during Friday's incident, her husband attempted to strangle her and she feared the years of abuse would cause her to lose her life and as a result she shot her husband, the sheriff's office says. Multiple injuries on the woman also corroborated her account of the incident.
Mastin was a Tulane Law student, according to an email from Tulane University obtained by WWL-TV.
"It is with profound sorrow that I must share that a member of our first-year class, Ian Mastin, was killed last night in Metairie. A published newspaper report quotes police as stating that Ian was killed by his wife following an incident of domestic violence," the e-mail states. "While we do not yet know all of the circumstances, our hearts go out to those affected by this terrible tragedy."
The university will offer counseling for law students affected by this incident.
The woman has been released without charges and once the investigation is complete, results will be given to the Jefferson Parish DA's office for review, according to the sheriff's office.
