Mental evaluation request halts bond hearing for man accused of robbing, paralyzing UNO student

Tata Say is accused of attempted first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery stemming from an incident that occurred in August that left a UNO student paralyzed.

WWL Louisiana media partners at The Times Picayune | New Orleans Advocate reported that the attorney for 20-year-old Tata Say has asked for a mental competency evaluation on Tuesday, which has abruptly halted his client's bond hearing.

Say is accused of attempted first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery stemming from an incident that occurred in August that left a University of New Orleans naval engineering student paralyzed after he was shot by Say and another gunman.

Seventeen-year-old Cruz Matute was also charged in the robbery. Say, who cut off his ankle monitor on Nov. 13 shortly after posting a $175,000 bail, which was originally set by the Orleans Parish Criminal Magistrate Court commissioner, was captured the following day.

Say's attorney Devin Jones asked Orleans Parish Criminal District Court Judge Nandi Campbell to schedule a mental competency evaluation.

Campbell set the hearing for Dec. 14.

Say will remain jailed in the meantime.
