Woman shot and killed near Holy Cross area, police say

NOPD said they believe an "altercation" between the woman and a man, who is now a suspect, led to the shooting.

NEW ORLEANS — UPDATE: On Tuesday, the NOPD announced the arrest of 68-year-old Gerard T. Hill as the alleged perpetrator of the fatal shooting the night before.

A woman was shot and killed Thursday night near the Holy Cross area, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

The shooting happened in the 500 block of St. Maurice Ave. 

Officers said someone called around 7:26 p.m. to report the shooting and it was confirmed at 7:36 p.m. 

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital where she later died.

NOPD said they believe an "altercation" between the woman and a man, who is now a suspect, led to the shooting.

The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will identify the victim and official cause of death upon completion of autopsy and notification of family.

A senior living facility is near the area, and we are working to find out if it is related to the shooting.
