One dead after shooting near Jackson Square, NOPD says

A man was pronounced dead on the scene at around 2 a.m. early Saturday morning at the intersection of Chartres Street and Dumaine Street in the French Quarter.

NEW ORLEANS — UPDATE: The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office identified the victim as 25-year-old Mervin McGee.

A man, later identified as 25-year-old Mervin McGee, was shot and killed in the French Quarter early Saturday morning, NOPD said.

The shooting happened at the intersection of Chartres Street and Dumaine Street, about 100 feet away from Jackson Square. 

NOPD got a call about the shooting at around 1:45 a.m. and EMS pronounced McGee dead soon after, according to police officials. 

Law enforcement did not immediately give any information on a suspect or an investigation. into the shooting. 

The shooting comes at a busy time for the French Quarter as tourists and locals pack the historic neighborhood in the days leading up to Mardi Gras.
