Slain tourist draws attention to lighting issues in Marigny

A GoFundMe was also created to cover rent, business expenses and wages while the family grieves. So far, it's raised more than $200,000.

NEW ORLEANS — Thirty-two-year-old Jacob Carter was visiting New Orleans with his husband when he was gunned down in the Marigny

New Orleans Police found Carter dead near Bourbon and Kerlerec Streets around 1:30 a.m. on Friday. It's unclear what led up to his death.

Police removed a blue Kia from Bayou St. John on Tuesday. Sources confirmed to WWL Louisiana it's connected to the crime, but it was not immediately clear how.

Carter and his husband started Howdy Bagel, a small business in Tacoma, Washington.

Since his death, customers dedicated a vigil at the entrance to pay their respects.

“It’s just not fair, but he’ll live on through us, and we’re all better for knowing him and being in his presence," one customer said.

A GoFundMe was also created to cover rent, business expenses and wages while the family grieves. So far, it's raised more than $200,000.

Marigny resident, Ralph Mason, said the area is a busy thoroughfare for folks walking to and from the French Quarter.

“We may get hundreds of people in a night, of people walking back and forth, so now it’s very very dangerous as we can see, not to be well-lit," Mason said.

Mason said working lights would help to deter crime. He said he's called multiple times about the broken lights on the corner of Bourbon and Kerlerec for years.

“We have several very large lights that Entergy just refuses to fix. In fact, they claim it’s not theirs, it’s the city’s, and of course, the city now says well those aren’t our lights. So, we have very bad lighting here and it’s very very dangerous," Mason said.

After WWL Louisiana Reporter, Lily Cummings, reached out to the City of New Orleans, a contractor came out.

The contractor said he replaced the streetlight with a brighter light.

On the same utility pole, there's another security light that Mason said is out. The contractor and City said that light is Entergy's responsibility.

“Entergy is currently working to confirm the ownership and disposition of the smaller piece of equipment shown," an Entergy New Orleans spokesperson said.

Faubourg Marigny Improvement Assoc. Member, Lisa Faatland, said she would like to see more police.

"We need a bigger presence of the 8th District here, but at the same time we realize the 8th District is short-staffed," Faatland said.
