Families celebrate tradition at Lights at Heritage Park

If you missed it, lights at Heritage Park and the Lights at Lafreniere park will be open through December 31st.

KENNER, La. — If you want to get in the holiday spirit one last time, the lights at Heritage Park will still be up through next Sunday. The lights are just one of the many ways the New Orleans Metro celebrated the holidays this year.

“My daughter and my granddaughter were visiting me for Christmas and I said I’ve got to take you down there and see it,” Al Morello said.

Al Morella has lived in Kenner for over fifty years. For him, walking through the lights at Heritage Park is a family tradition. He’s been visiting the lights for years, but said nothing compared to the display this Christmas.

“I’ve never seen it this beautiful,” Morella said.

The lights at Heritage Park just scratch the surface of the holiday traditions celebrated across Louisiana, each of them coming with their own memories for families across the state.

One of those traditions is the Lights at Lafreniere Park. It started in one family’s front yard, now, it brings the whole community together. This year, 10,000 lights illuminated the park.

“I’ve been going to see the lights here since I was a little boy, so it brings a lot of old memories and new memories now with my grandbabies,” Mike Lacoste, said.

One of the oldest New Orleans holiday traditions, Bonfire on the Levee’s was celebrated one day early, to avoid possible rain on Sunday. The rescheduling didn’t keep it from drawing a crowd.

"It’s a family tradition, and I’ve been doing this since I was 8 years old," said one visitor.

Speaking of drawing a crowd, the French Quarter was flooded with thousands of carolers for the annual Caroling in Jackson Square this year. For some, it’s a Christmas tradition they’ve kept for years.

“We try to make it as often as we can, especially when it’s a beautiful night like this," Bonnie said.

If you missed it, lights at Heritage Park and the Lights at Lafreniere Park will be open through December 31st.
