I-55 southbound reopens following fatal multi-vehicle crash, completed bridge inspection

DOTD inspections on the northbound side are still ongoing and there is no timeline for when it will reopen.

MANCHAC, La. — Editor's note: On Friday, Oct. 27, Louisiana State Police reduced the number of victims to seven fatalities rather than eight following a forensic  investigation.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced that I-55 southbound reopened to traffic Thursday morning.

The DOTD says the interstate will be reduced to one lane near the crash site for the time being.

DOTD bridge inspectors have completed the inspection of southbound I-55 after Monday’s fatal multi-vehicle accident that killed seven people and injured over 60 other people.

Inspectors have determined that the roadway is safe for travel according to the DOTD.

Commuters should be aware that I-55 northbound remains closed at this time. Inspections on the northbound side are still ongoing and there is no timeline for when it will reopen.
