Jefferson Parish holds off on recycling | Here's what residents need to know

The contract could be finalized at the next parish council meeting on Jan. 17.

JEFFERSON PARISH, La. — Recycling in Jefferson Parish is paused until the Jefferson Parish Council approves the contract with Ramelli Waste.

According to Nola.com councilmembers recommended residents to stop putting out recycling bins until further notice.

Recycling drop-off sites are closed and residents should keep their recyclable materials until recycling resumes or to dispose of them, said Rachel Strassel, a spokesperson for Jefferson Parish.

Residents in Jefferson Parish experienced changes in their trash and recycling pickups at the start of the New Year, with the switch from Waste Connections. Now, River Birch is taking over trash collection and Ramelli Waste for recycling.

The parish selected Ramelli Waste to collect recycling on Dec. 6 and the contract is still being negotiated, Scott Walker, Jefferson Parish councilmember told Nola.com. Walker said once the contract is finalized, Ramelli can begin recycling and "provide residents with new bins with lids, but that process would take up to 90 days."

Walker said residents have reached out to his office with concerns about River Birch's automated garbage trucks. Walker said the automated trucks would be used on a case-by-case basis, he told Nola.com.

Neighborhoods like River Ridge or Old Metairie with overhanging trees or power lines would likely keep the rear-loading truck.

New rules for trash pick-up:

  • Bagged materials will be picked up once a week with bulk waste.
  • Bulk waste will be limited to six cubic yards a week.
  • Waste generated by a contractor will no longer be picked up, including commercial tree cutters, landscapers and general contractors.

The contract could be finalized at the next parish council meeting on Jan. 17.
