TERRYTOWN, La. — Authorities rescued 157 animals from a single home in Terrytown Monday night, according to Jefferson Parish officials.
Jefferson Parish Animal Control Officers executed a warrant based on "probable cause of animals needing intervention."
"Once we were in the house, we realized quickly the animals needed to be removed” said Shannon Neal, Chief Animal Control Officer for Jefferson Parish, “Sometimes people take on more animals than they can handle and it leaves them unable to provide the minimum standard of care.”
Several species were rescued from the home and are currently being evaluated by veterinarians.
In total, 83 chickens, 57 dogs, seven rabbits, six nursing puppies, two baby chicks, one pigeon and one quail were recovered.

"There was no working with this person. The animals needed to come out," said Neal.
The animals were being cared for at the Westbank Animal Shelter. Due to the sudden, unexpected increase in population, people are needed to adopt or foster animals from the shelter.
The Animal Shelter is holding an adoption special through July. Large dogs, 26 pounds or more, and cats will be available for adoption for only $10.00. All fees for senior dogs and cats; eight (8) years or older will be waived.
Officials said no formal charges had been brought against the homeowner who was keeping the animals.
