KENNER – Police chased a drug suspect from Kenner to New Orleans Tuesday night before arresting him.

According to the Kenner Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 2600 block of Acron Street around 8:11 p.m. on Nov. 13 to investigate a suspicious person that had been parked at the end of the block with their engine running for two hours.

Police say that as they spoke with the suspect, they smelled a strong marijuana odor coming from the car. When the officers asked him to step out of the vehicle, the subject reportedly “frantically reached under the seat,” at which point the officers attempted to open the driver’s door and remove him from the vehicle.

The driver hit the gas and sped away, dragging one of the officers with him for about 15 feet, according to police. The officer’s injuries were minor.

A vehicle pursuit ensued from Kenner that ended in New Orleans at North Galvez and Kerlerec Street. Police say the suspect, identified as 26-year-old James Morris, sped through residential neighborhoods to evade police, nearly striking several vehicles and traveling against traffic.

Morris eventually abandoned his vehicle and ran on foot, but was quickly captured. A search of his vehicle turned over 2.8 grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Morris was arrested for aggravated assault with a motor vehicle upon a peace officer, aggravated flight from an officer, resisting and officer, possession of marijuana (misdemeanor), possession of drug paraphernalia and traffic violations.

Anyone who has any information about these incidents to call the Kenner Police at (504) 712-2222 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
