New Houma police chief selected, waiting for approval vote

The Terrebonne Parish President announced the appointment, now council must vote to ratify the new Police Chief.

HOUMA, La. — Houma Police Department's Chief of Detectives Travis Theriot has been selected to become the next Chief of Police.

Terrebonne Parish President Gordy Dove appointed Theriot to replace Former Police Chief Dana Coleman. He retired from the department on Tuesday.

Now, Lt. Theriot must receive the vote of approval from the Parish Council before he can step into the role. Our partners at Houma Today report the parish council will vote on March 15.

"I feel like we have one of the best organizations in the area, if not the best," Lt. Theriot said before the Terrebonne Parish Council Tuesday night. "I plan on doing great things going forward."

Former Police Chief Coleman says he thinks Parish President Dove made a great choice, and that anyone on the department would have done an excellent job. Coleman will begin working with the Louisiana Attorney General's Office to investigate corruption Monday, according to Houma Today.

Dove has not commented on the situation.
