NEW ORLEANS — A person was struck by a vehicle on I-10 and died early Wednesday morning the New Orleans Police Department said.

The fatal hit-and-run crash on I-10 East prompted State Police to close the Slidell flyover exit on the Pontchartrain Expressway heading eastbound and the I-10 Poydras Street exit.

Initial reports show at about 1:47 a.m. a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on the interstate. when officers arrived, they discovered an unknown victim in the roadway of I-10 East near the Poydras Street exit.  EMS arrived and pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

"Through investigation, it was determined that the victim was apparently walking in the left lane of traffic and was struck by an unknown vehicle that failed to stop. The victim was subsequently struck by multiple passing vehicles," the NOPD said in their report.

Police say EMS arrived on the scene and declared the victim dead on the scene.

The crash happened on a stretch of I-10 in New Orleans that is very dark due to many streetlights out and as the city struggles to repair the lights.
