NEW ORLEANS — A massive fire at a vacant Algiers apartment complex collapsed five sections of building and required three alarms Saturday night.

The Oakmont apartment complex has been the scene of three fires in the past 11 months, including Saturday’s.

The first was last March and that fire displaced any remaining tenants. There was another fire in November in which several people who had been making the place home had to be rescued.

Saturday’s fire was massive and it’s believed that no one was inside or injured, though firefighters did comb the place just in case.

The fire started about 6:45 and rapidly escalated and a third alarm was sent, but some units had trouble getting from the east bank to the west bank due to parade traffic.

Nineteen fire units and 68 firefighters in all responded. The fire was under control shortly after 8 p.m.
