Flyover ramp from airport opens Friday with pomp and circumstance

Friday the opening of the second of the two flyovers, this one from the airport directly onto I-10, was celebrated with a procession led by a Mardi Gras-style float.

KENNER, La. — Nearly four years after the new terminal opened at Armstrong International Airport in Kenner the flyover ramps to and from the airport are officially completed.

Friday morning the opening of the second of the two flyovers, this one from the airport directly onto I-10, was celebrated with a procession led by a Mardi Gras-style float.

The ramp opened to traffic at 7 a.m.

Both flyovers are expected to improve traffic flow at the airport where people have had to navigate roads and red lights on Loyola Drive to get to and from the airport.

The ramps were delayed several times but the Fall opening was actually a bit sooner than expected, due mainly to good weather that allowed construction on most days.

"We've already seen immediate improvements in the interchange with the opening of the first ramp," said DOTD Secretary Eric Kalivoda. "Opening the second ramp will continue improving driving conditions for travelers and locals."

Like the first, the second ramp avoids traffic lights by passing over the Loyola/Veterans Blvd. and Loyola/I-10 intersections with direct access to I-10 from MSY. Drivers will merge from the I-10 median from the left side onto I-10 eastbound towards Metairie and New Orleans.
