Councilmember calls on utilities, cable and internet providers not to disconnect customers as COVID-19 spreads

“These services are vital"

NEW ORLEANS — Councilmember Jason Williams, chair of New Orleans’ Smart and Sustainable Cities Committee, called on telecom and utilities companies not to disconnect customers as New Orleans deals with the spread of the COVID-19 novel coronavirus.

“These services are vital so that our children would be able to work remotely, as New Orleans public schools testified yesterday they are preparing to do if needed, and families are able to wash hands and clothes as recommended by public health officials,” the statement from Williams said.

Several universities in the New Orleans area will be conducting classes remotely for the remainder of the semester. Similar changes may come to Orleans Parish Public Schools.

Superintendent Henderson Lewis said that the Orleans Parish School Board is preparing for anything, but no changes to when and where classes will be held have been made as of Thursday.
