OPSO Major helps mother and infant after car fire on I-10

NEW ORLEANS — A Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office Major stepped in to help a mother and her infant after a car on I-10 Wednesday morning.

OPSO officials say Major Jeffery Lawrence was on his way to work when he saw a vehicle on fire on the westbound side of I-10 near the Elysian Fields exit. As Lawrence got closer to the fire he saw the mother and child standing right behind the burning vehicle.

He pulled over and let the mother and her child into his vehicle. Lawrence then called the New Orleans Fire Department to report the fire and two other OPSO deputies to help with traffic control.

“I love helping people. That’s what I do every day when we help people with restraining orders," Lawrence said. "This morning was no different. I’ve handled some serious stuff in my career, and this just happened, so I did what I’ve always done.”
