Coast Guard says 1.1M gallons of oil could have been released in Gulf spill

Several agencies are working to clean it up.

PLAQUEMINES PARISH, La. — The Coast Guard now confirms WWL-TV's reports from Friday that said calculations indicate 1.1 million gallons of crude oil could have been released from the pipeline. But overflights didn’t find that much on surface sheen & spill isn’t threatening the Louisiana coast.

The Coast Guard released new photos late Monday afternoon and noted that approximately 210 gallons of the oily-water mixture have been recovered.

Several agencies are working to clean it up. The oil was leaking from a pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico.

Government sources confirmed to WWL Louisiana that oil was no longer leaking from the Main Pass Oil Gathering Pipeline (MPOG) on Sunday night.

The leak was first spotted Thursday morning 19 miles east of the mouth of main pass.
