Report: Port Allen woman’s home mistakenly demolished by city contractors

The homeowner, 65-year-old Earnestine Smith told our partners at WBRZ that contractors were supposed to tear down the house next door.

PORT ALLEN, La. — Contractors made a big mistake in West Baton Rouge Parish when they mistakenly demolished the wrong home.

The homeowner, 65-year-old Earnestine Smith told our partners at WBRZ that contractors were supposed to tear down the house next door.

Last May, the house next door to Smith was condemned by the City of Port Allen but because of an address mix-up, demolition contractors mistakenly tore down Smith’s home instead.

Contractors then came back and demolished the correct home and were even willing to give Smith a couple thousand dollars for the damage but the homeowner said it wasn't enough money to rebuild the home that was left in a pile of rubble.

Smith has now hired a lawyer to help in her legal fight to get the money to rebuild the home. She says the home had just been renovated.
