Libraries offering free eclipse glasses for Southeast Louisiana

Libraries in New Orleans, Jefferson Parish and St. Tammany Parish plan to start distributing glasses ahead of the solar eclipse on Mon. April 8.

LOUISIANA, USA — Libraries across Southeast Louisiana are doing their part to help prepare people for the upcoming solar eclipse on Mon., April 8. 

According to NOLA.com, The Space Science Institute, a science non profit has distributed 5 million eclipse glasses to 10,000 libraries around the U.S.

All New Orleans library branches will start giving away eclipse glasses Thursday, library officials have said those glasses would only be available on a first come, first serve basis.

In Jefferson Parish, starting Friday, residents need to bring their library card to pick up their free pair of eclipse glasses.

And according to a social media post from St. Tammany Parish Library, all parish libraries started giving out glasses on Monday.

NASA says that looking at the sun is not safe anytime, including during an eclipse, that includes looking through a camera lens, telescope or binoculars. NASA has said that regular sunglasses should not function as a replacement for eclipse glasses.

Even though Southeast Louisiana is not in the path of totality, still there will be a spectacle locally as about 82% of the sun will be covered by the moon at around 1:50 on Monday.

New Orleans library have an eclipse viewing scheduled at the Earl K. Long library, near UNO, from 12 to 2 p.m. on eclipse day, next Monday.
