Woman killed when car slams into building, NOPD investigates as homicide

According to the NOPD, a driver of a Ford SUV struck and killed a woman before crashing into building.

NEW ORLEANS — A woman was killed near a St. Roch intersection on Monday morning after she allegedly got out of a vehicle before the driver then proceeded to run her over.

Initial information from the New Orleans Police Department said a female, who was on foot at the time, was involved in the crash at around 11 a.m. and was declared dead on the scene by EMS. The incident was originally listed as a traffic fatality of a pedestrian before being classified as a homicide.

According to police, a Ford SUV crashed into a building next to the St. Roch Market in the 2300 block of Marais Street.

The crash resulted in the death of the victim.

A resident of the building told WWL Louisiana what she heard during the crash and what she saw while reviewing surveillance camera footage following the incident.

"It was just really loud and didn't know what happened," she explained, asking to remain anonymous. The resident recounted seeing the moment the tragic incident took place. "Oh, it's something to see. He just drove over her."

The video was turned over to the NOPD and not shared publicly. The resident, who was still upset and shaken, said the video showed a man and a woman in the silver SUV in a long argument, and then the woman got out of the car.

"And then she walks to the sidewalk and he just goes right at her," she said.

The business owner across the street shared security camera footage of the vehicle driving up and stopping. In the far left edge of the video, a person can be seen exiting the passenger door when the vehicle comes to a stop, before driving off.

But the crash is out of camera range.

The owner ran outside after the crash and saw the driver climbing out of the wreckage.

"He was frantic, trying to get in and out and the car," he explained. "He couldn't really open the doors to the car because it was wedged in there, so he was kind of hopping around just all frantic."

The resident said NOPD was rapidly on the scene and arrested the man who was driving the car.

"He got cuffed and taken away pretty quickly," she said. "No resistance. No yelling any words or anything."

The identity of the victim has not been revealed, nor has any charges the driver is facing.

"It's just all sad, very sad," the resident said. "You don't know what's going to happen when you wake up in the morning."

This is an ongoing investigation and this story will be updated once further information becomes available.
