Monday's Forecast: Cloudy with a chance of eclipse

Meteorologist Payton Malone says there's a chance of rain and almost a certainty of clouds but there could be some breaks.

NEW ORLEANS — Southeast Louisiana won’t see a total eclipse Monday, but our area will still see over 80% coverage.

There's always a concern about viewing an eclipse properly. In fact, Jefferson Parish schools are so concerned that they are letting students out after about three hours Monday.

The only problem in our forecast could come from clouds. A storm system will push clouds into our area Monday just in time for the eclipse. It appears the sky will be mostly cloudy during the peak hours early Monday afternoon, but there is still a chance to see the Moon blocking the Sun.

We do expect occasional quick breaks in the clouds, so you could possibly see the eclipse for brief moments. The chance for rain is limited Monday afternoon with only a few isolated showers around.

If you’re traveling to see the eclipse, the same problem with clouds is likely across much of Louisiana and South and Central Texas. As you head further north toward North Texas and Arkansas the chance of clouds blocking the entire event becomes less likely. In the end, take your glasses, look up and hope for the best!
