Derek Carr confirmed with 2nd concussion in a month

Dennis Allen told the media on Monday that Derek Carr has suffered another concussion and is in protocol.

METAIRIE, La. — Saints quarterback Derek Carr suffered his second concussion in a month's time, head coach Dennis Allen confirmed Monday to the media at his day after game weekly briefing.

Carr also has an unspecified rib injury but his shoulder checked out fine.

Carr was smashed to the ground by Detroit Lions defensive lineman Bruce Irvin, a brutal hit that likely would not have been penalized had Irvin not followed it by lowering his entire body weight onto Carr.

Two concussions in a short period of time is a major concern for anyone's well being and putting Carr in harm's way again this weekend would not seem to be a wise decision.

Allen said that Jameis Winston would start if Carr can't go.

In addition to Carr, defensive tackle Malcolm Roach suffered an as-yet-unspecified knee injury that could require surgery, according to Allen.

Carr was booed heavily by the team's fans in its loss to Detroit Sunday.
