NEW ORLEANS Apparently, three series in last week's win over Indianapolis is all the preseason work New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees will get this year.

The Saints will start veteran quarterback Luke McCown against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday evening, while Brees will watch from the sidelines, according to a source. It will be McCown's third start of the preseason.

The Saints, according to the same source, plan to play McCown for one quarter and then insert second-year quarterback Ryan Griffin for the remainder of the game.

Head coach Sean Payton intimated earlier this week this would be his plan. He insists he's still evaluating both quarterbacks, though, and has yet to decide who'll serve as Brees' backup this season.

In three preseason games, McCown is 22 of 40 for 211 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, while Griffin is 37 of 55 for 404 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Griffin has played 103 snaps to McCown's 75.

Brees, meanwhile, is finally healthy after missing two weeks with a left oblique injury. He played just 28 snaps against Indianapolis and was 9 of 15 for 128 yards and two touchdowns. He led the Saints on two 80-yard scoring drives in the first quarter before being replaced by McCown.

The Saints open the regular season on the road against the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 7.
