New Orleans school-zone speed cameras to shut down for the summer

Cameras will be reactivated in August for the next school year.

NEW ORLEANS — All school-zone traffic cameras will turn off on Friday, May 24, at 4:45 p.m. according to New Orleans officials.

Cameras will be reactivated in August for the next school year.

Last year, Mayor Cantrell signed an ordinance that expanded school zone eligibility to high schools. It will allow the city to install crosswalks, signs, striping and " 'other traffic control devices' " for all New Orleans schools, according to Nola.com.

The ordinance is scheduled to take effect in the 2024-2025 academic year, administration said in a release.

"Between 2017-2021, there were 6,532 crashes near New Orleans schools, according to an analysis performed by the administration. Over half of the crashes involved serious injuries near schools," our partners reported.

High schools in Orleans Parish have over 70 traffic cameras for school zone enforcement.

School zone operation hours are from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, enforcing 20 mph speed limits during the academic year.
