NEW ORLEANS — The National Weather Service in New Orleans has issued a Flash Flood Warning for parts of Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, and St. Bernard parishes until 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
At 11:41 a.m., Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the Southshore. Forecasters say up to three inches of rain has fallen in some areas and another three inches is possible. Heavy rain could cause street flooding.
"Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly," the NWS said.
The City of New Orleans has lifted parking restrictions on neutral grounds until further notice.
Some locations that will experience flash flooding include New Orleans, Harvey, Timberlane, Marrero, Chalmette, Belle Chasse, Metairie, Avondale, Jefferson, Gretna, Westwego, Terrytown, Arabi, Woodmere, Bridge City, Estelle, Elmwood, and Lakefront Airport.
Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Nicholas is causing heavy rainfall across Louisiana after making landfall as a Category 1 hurricane overnight in Texas. Forecasters say the storm will bring significant rainfall amounts, potentially resulting in life-threatening flash flooding and urban flooding in some areas.
