Secretary of State Tom Schedler’s resignation announcement caps a week of calls for him to step down.
Tom Schedler did a lot of things right as Secretary of State, but he also did some things very, very wrong.
The Secretary of State’s office, before and after Schedler got there, has been one of the best-run agencies in state government. Its professional staff maintains files of important business documents, processes election returns, and operates museums across Louisiana. When President Trump tried to get states to turn over sensitive voter registration data, Schedler, a Republican, stood tall and refused.
But all of Schedler’s good work cannot and does not excuse years of sexually harassing a female employee in his office – and exposing the state to expensive legal damages.
Tuesday, Schedler did one last thing right. He resigned.
