SLIDELL – A man was arrested for stealing a 1956 World Series Game 5 ticket from a Slidell man’s home.

According to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, the ticket was a family heirloom.

The ticket was from Game 5 in the 1956 World Series when pitcher Don Larsen made baseball history for throwing a perfect game for the New York Yankees for the win over the Brooklyn Dodgers. The game marked the first and only perfect game thrown during World Series play. Baseball legends Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantel contributed to the win.

Tickets from that game can carry a value up to $6,000.

On April 16, the ticket owner told deputies that it was stolen by an acquaintance.

He told deputies that he had a soft spot for others who were down on their luck and befriended, 20-year-old Jeffery Garmon, who is homeless, and his brother. The ticket owner allowed Garmon and his brother to stay with him Sunday night.

He recalled showing Garmon and his brother the ticket the night before, before going to bed, the sheriff’s office says. The next day, he woke up to the sound of Garmon and his brother leaving his home and noticed the folder where he kept the ticket was open with the ticket missing from it.

The sheriff’s office says, the responding deputy was familiar with Garmon and his brother and found them at one of their usual hangouts near Gause Boulevard and I-10. A search of Garmon’s backpack revealed the stolen ticket. He was then arrested and booked on one count of felony theft.

The ticket has now been returned to its owner.
