3rd person dies in weekend crash in Metairie

Three people have now died and another was seriously injured in a crash on Sunday morning on Airline Drive.

METAIRIE, La. — A third person has been killed in a car crash that occurred Sunday morning on Airline Drive near North Atlanta Street.

The crash involved an 18-wheeler and a car. The car, for reasons still under investigation, veered to the right shoulder and struck the back of an I-18 wheeler that was parked on the side of the road. 

According to Louisiana State Police, the driver, 24-year-old German Mejia died in the crash, along with one of his passengers 22-year-old Michael Medrano. A third victim, 22-year-old Leandro Gonzalez died Monday, according to State Police.

The police say a 15-year-old who was in the left rear passenger seat was taken to an area hospital with critical injuries.  

Mejia was the only one wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and impairment is suspected, LSP says. Mejia was also an unlicensed driver.

The person responsible for the 18-wheeler was cited for illegal parking. 

The crash remains under investigation. 

The incident caused the closure of a portion of Airline Drive heading west. The street has been reopened as of 10:30 a.m.
