CHALMETTE, La. — A rash of vehicle thefts occurred in St. Bernard Parish shortly after 12 a.m. on Tuesday.

According to Sheriff James Pohlmann, a total of seven vehicles were stolen from residences across Chalmette, Meraux and Violet.

Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Bureau are actively working the case along with assistance from the Louisiana State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Two of those vehicles have been recovered.

Residents are urged to report any suspicious activity in their neighborhood by calling the Sheriff’s Office at (504) 271-2501.

“If you see something, say something,” Pohlmann said. “We want you to call and report any suspicious behavior you see so we can investigate it immediately and try to stop these types of crimes before they happen.”

The sheriff also reminded residents to keep their vehicles locked in an effort to deter criminals from committing a “crime of opportunity.”

“Locking your vehicle and not leaving items of value, especially guns, wallets, purses or keys, in plain sight can greatly reduce your chances of being a victim of theft,” Pohlmann said. “Taking a moment to secure your valuables helps create a stronger, more secure neighborhood for everyone."
