Man asleep on French Quarter sidewalk hit by car and killed, suspect arrested

Kenneth Marenco, 28, was arrested and booked with vehicular homicide after he was taken to the hospital Saturday morning. The victim was found dead at the scene.

NEW ORLEANS — A man sleeping on a French Quarter sidewalk was hit and killed by a driver early Saturday morning.

Kenneth Marenco, 28, was arrested and booked with vehicular homicide after he was taken to the hospital Saturday morning. 

"For unknown reasons, (Marenco) veered left, striking the median, then veered right onto the sidewalk hitting a male who was sleeping there," NOPD said Saturday morning. "The victim was declared deceased on scene by EMS." 

Police said the homicide happened around 2:50 a.m. near the intersection of Decatur and Toulouse Streets, a cross-street that sits only about 100 feet from Jackson Square.

NOPD did not immediately identify the man who was killed. Although police said he was 58 years old.
