JP deputy shoots and kills N.O. suspect in Metairie apartment parking lot

Sheriff Joe Lopinto said the suspect tried to escape from the scene and drove toward the approaching deputy who fired into the windshield, striking the man.

METAIRIE, La. — A Jefferson Parish deputy shot and killed a man suspected in a shooting in Orleans Parish, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto said Tuesday afternoon.

Lopinto said the suspect tried to escape from the scene and drove toward the approaching deputy who fired into the windshield, striking the man.

Lopinto said the unidentified suspect was known to the sheriff’s office and had been arrested “numerous times” in Orleans and Jefferson Parish.

According to Lopinto, the NOPD asked for help in locating the man suspected in a shooting in New Orleans. Armed with the information that the suspect lived in The Lumiere apartment complex in the 3300 block of West Esplanade, Lopinto said officers found a car identified in the New Orleans shooting and waited for the suspect.

Lopinto told the media that the suspect got into the car and immediately tried escaping when he saw deputies, backing the vehicle into a fence and then driving forward toward the deputy.

“As usual with this suspect, he attempted to escape and put one of our deputy’s lives in danger,” said Lopinto in a late afternoon press conference. “He used the proper force.”

Lopinto said the suspect was well known to the sheriff’s office and they’d “dealt with (him) many times before on drugs and guns.”
