NOPD and other city agencies moving

A warehouse once known to locals as the Old Chiquita Banana Building could soon be the city’s public safety warehouse.

NEW ORLEANS — Big changes may be coming for first responders in New Orleans. The City Council signed a lease for the new NOPD headquarters, and leaders announced plans to move three other public safety agencies by hurricane season.

City officials are making moves.

“There is a Tetris game of four or five different properties all for the benefit of this,” New Orleans City Chief Administrative Officer Gilbert Montaño said.

On Tuesday, the City Council signed the lease for NOPD’s new headquarters at 1615 Poydras and announced a move for Homeland Security, parts of the fire department, and EMS.

“It’s a great day, it’s an important day, and we are progressing forward,” Montaño.

A warehouse once known to locals as the Old Chiquita Banana Building could soon be the city’s public safety warehouse.

“The public safety warehouse is moving forward,” Montaño said.

It’s a puzzle city leaders plan to solve by hurricane season, less than a month away.

“I am continuously hopeful that we are planning for a summer move-in date,” Montaño said.

The city is still looking for a new location for NOPD’s evidence room.
