ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. — Louisiana State Police report that a man from Covington died from his injuries after crashing into a Freightliner truck in St. Tammany Parish.

State Police say shortly before 5:00 a.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a two-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 25 near Gotti Road in St. Tammany Parish.

They say the crash claimed the life of 54-year-old Lonnie Sanchez Jr. of Covington.

The state police investigation revealed the crash happened as Sanchez was southbound on LA Hwy 25 in a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

At the same time, a 2012 Freightliner truck was at a complete stop on the southbound shoulder of LA Hwy 25. For reasons still under investigation, Troopers say the Jeep veered onto the shoulder and crashed into the Freightliner.

Despite wearing a seat belt, Sanchez sustained serious injuries and was transported by EMS to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the Freightliner was not injured. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor and this crash remains under investigation.
