Coroner identifies 7 victims involved in fatal multi-vehicle I-55 crash

The St. John Parish Coroner's Office has successfully identified seven involved in the catastrophic crash that involved 168 vehicles on I-55.

LAPLACE, La. — Editor's note: On Friday, Oct. 27, Louisiana State Police reduced the number of victims to seven fatalities rather than eight following a forensic  investigation. 

The St. John Parish Coroner's Office has successfully identified seven victims involved in the catastrophic crash that involved 168 vehicles and stretched over a mile along Interstate 55 near Manchac, La., on Monday.

The victims include:

  • James Fleming, 87, Lake St. Louis, Mo.
  • Nakia Gaines (father), 49, New Orleans, La.
  • Mason Gaines (son), 6, Madisonville, La.
  • Fernando Francisco DeMoraes, 49, Chalmette, La.
  • Jose Elias Valle, 37, Chalmette, La.
  • Corinne Hebert, 21, Plaquemine, La.
  • Quatab Singh Negi, 47, Hammond, La.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced that I-55 southbound reopened to traffic Thursday morning.

Commuters should be aware that I-55 northbound remains closed at this time.
